Indo-Pacific – Mangroves

It is an habitat in intertidal zones close to the mouth of rivers in tropical and subtropical areas. These marshy and brackish places form a dense mud where the mangrove grows. These plants have arched roots down from the trunk to the water´s edge. Mangroves are used as shelter for some animals.

They play an important role in the protection of the coast against the waves and strong winds. It is a breeding place for many fish species, molluscs, crustaceans and marine mammals. It has ecological and socioeconomic relevance. Mangroves are forestal systems highly exploited and deteriorated by human activities.
